2/09/2005: PAF's Dr. Maria O'Donovan and Lynda Carroll organized two sessions at the Society for Historical Archaeology annual meetings in York, England. "The Archaeology of Travel" included 11 papers and discussions by Drs. Matthew Johnson and Barbara Bender. The response was very positive, and there are plans to publish the papers in an edited volume.

4/01/2005: On April 4, 2005 PAF will begin the set-up phase of a data recovery project in downtown Binghamton. Under the direction of Maria O'Donovan, crew will investigate up to ten historic properties in the urban core of Binghamton. Previous investigations found nineteenth century foundations and artifact deposits related to an elite neighborhood in early Binghamton. In addition, two prehistoric components were discovered. One dates to c. A.D. 900-1200, and was defined by prehistoric pottery, stone tools, and hearths/storage pits. The second is an older hunter-gatherer camp, possibly related to the Brewerton Phase of the Late Archaic (c. 3000-2500 B.C.). Read our research proposal.

3/08/2006: The E. Cornell website is now online! Click here to read about the 19th century farmstead excavated by PAF in Ithaca, NY.

3/08/2006: Lyceum 2006! Tim Knapp and Maria O'Donovan gave a presentation on the work PAF did for the Binghamton Academic Center in downtown Binghamton. The presentation included photos of the excavation, research potential and goals, and a small exhibition of some of the artifacts PAF uncovered.

3/09/2006: Daniel Seib gave a talk to the Norwich Rotary club on February 28th, 2006 on the archaeology of rural blacksmith shops in upstate New York. Rural blacksmith shops represent one of the earliest industries established by settlers in this region, and the deposits left behind by blacksmith shops show up in recognizable patterns in the archaeological record. Archaeologists can identify major features of the blacksmith shop such as the forge, the anvil, and the workbench, as well as midden deposits such as fuel waste, scrap piles, and spare wagon parts. Plotting the locations of these deposits in light of historic documents and trade journals allows us to recreate these shops and learn more about the aspects of this early industry that were not covered in contemporaneous literature. These blacksmiths and the shops they worked in are now a thing of the past; but through the deposits they left behind, we are able to glimpse what life was like back then, and even learn new facts about their work and their lives.

5/03/2006: Nina Versaggi, Christopher Hohman, and Timothy Knapp presented a paper on the Herrick Hollow Archaeological District at the 2006 Society for American Archaeology meetings. Entitled, Upland Landscapes: Land Use Strategies on the Allegheny Plateau of New York, the paper discussed non-subsistence issues that may have influenced land use in the remote uplands of Delaware County.

8/31/2006: The New York Archaeological Council (NYAC) will hold its Fall meeting on September 30 at Binghamton University. The general meeting starts at 1 pm (Science 1, Room 149), followed by a program at 3 pm. The title of the program is:"Case Studies in Urban Archaeology: Discussions Leading to Standards." One of the case studies will be by PAF staff on the BU Downtown project. The general meeting and program are open to the public.

12/07/2006: The Herrick Hollow mini-site is up and running. Follow the link to learn about Archaeology on the Divide, the prehistory of the uplands region between the Delaware and Susquehanna river valleys.
