Over 18,000 artifacts were recovered from the E. Cornell Site. The majority of artifacts were the architectural remains of the house, especially nails and window glass. The census records for the site indicate that the house was wood framed, though brick and structural slate fragments were also identified during the excavations. The majority of these artifacts were clustered near the area where historic maps place the house.

Unit Excavations

Animal bones were the second most common type of identifiable artifact. These included obvious food remains, such as butchered pig, cow, and sheep bones, as well as the bones of unidentified mammals and birds, and intrusive (naturally occurring) species such as crow. Other food remains encountered on site include large quantities of peach pits, clam and mussel shells, and the seeds of various fruits. The latter were recovered from soil samples which were subjected to flotation analysis in the PAF laboratory. In addition, millions of raspberry/blackberry (Rubus sp.) seeds were clearly visible in soils of the privy/trash pit feature.

Ceramic Artifacts

Thousands of food-related artifacts were recovered from the site. These include ceramic and glass fragments of food service and preparation vessels. Many of these dishes were fancy, with elaborate decorations or made from decorative pressed glass. The assemblage included quite a few “optional” service vessels which were not necessary for eating but which made the dining table more attractive. These included fancy a blue transfer-printed vegetable dish, a pressed glass master salt, and glass

cruets. Some dishes matched, but the majority were unmatched and likely obtained on an individual basis. Other food-related artifacts include utensil parts, including a bone utensil handle. Glass bottles and jars associated with food were also recovered, including a bottle of baby formula and a decorative liquor bottled embossed with an American eagle.
